A few step by step photos for assembling a custom entrance gate which is 42" wide and 75 " tall. Also we shall go through some of the custom details we use to put together one of our custom driveway gates.
The driveway gate was built with an iron frame and an automatic gate opener but first we had to build the redwood frame.
This photo also has the smaller side gate frame as well. As you can see they are both filled with putty to cover up any splits, cracks and nail holes. This is one of the best ways to get a nice finish on any woodworking project.
The Side gate is to be installed on the side of the house, so a framework needs to be fabricated. We attach 2 x 4s to the house and block wall and also set a 4x4 post to frame out this custom gate.
Next we have to sand the gate frame and pre-stain it. We also have to pre-sand and pre-stain any of the slats on all 4 sides. This assures the most protection. So many fences you see are never sealed on the edges and the wood can expand and contract over an extended period of time.
This type of gate is among the BASIC GATE category on our site. This is using the regular fence boards.
These are fit in the gate frame and attached with nails and exterior wood glue.
After the final sanding we attach the 10 ft gate to the Iron frame which includes the automatic opener. This is all painted and assembled before the wood gate is attached.
This also has 2 columns on either side that are to be filled in with horizontal T & G.
The side gate also has a column to be filled in on the Left and the frame is custom built before installation.
After all the finish work is completed we install the gate with the hinges and latch.
This is the back side showing the decorative framework.
The driveway gate is also installed and we complete another fun filled day in the sun. WE try and make the best of these hot days because fortunately this summer in Los Angeles has been a mild one.
Thank you!!!
